The ladder technique is considered one of the best Neville Goddard’s manifestation techniques.
This technique requires you to imagine you are climing a ladder, every night before going to bed. You must repeat this exercise for three nights in a row.
Neville’s invitation is to create a mental picture of the ladder. Neville described doing this when he got two impossible tickets for Aida for his two brothers.
He teaches that what we place in our imagination is more than just an empty thought – it becomes our reality.
Step 1 – Imagine a ladder
It’s important to be as specific as you can. You may consider writing down a detailed description of your ladder, so that you could have a clear image in your head.
You can think of:
– How big is the ladder?
– What colour is it?
– Is it tall or short?
– What material is it made of? (wood, metal or something else)
– Are the steps narrow or wide?
– Does it feel cold or hot?
– It is heavy? Light?
– What does it smell of?
You can also use visuals, drawings, colours, textures – whatever helps making it real for you. Writing everything down helps you see it in your mind’s eye.
Step 2 – Relax
Do this exercise at bedtime, just before you are about to drift off to sleep, when you are the most relaxed. Neville Goddard calls this the ‘State Akin To Sleep’.
Use music or stay in silence, whatever makes you feel comfortable and relaxed.
Step 3 – Imagine climbing your ladder
Feel yourself climbing the ladder in your imagination — use all your senses to feel it as real as possible. See how smooth or rough the ladder feels under your hands and feet.
If it is made of metal, does it feel cold?
If it made of wood, can you smell it?
Does it feel steady or wobbly?
If your mind wanders, gently bring it back to your task.
If you get tired of imagining yourself climbing it, simply imagine touching or looking at the ladder instead. Neville calls this your “imaginal scene”, so put your imagination to work!
The most important thing is to feel it as real as possible.
Climb the ladder in your imagination for as many times as you can, or until you naturally drift off to sleep.
Step 4 – Write notes stating “I will NOT climb a ladder”
During the day you should write on several pieces of paper the statement “I will not climb a ladder”. Then leave these pieces of paper in places where you would look at every day, such as on your mirror/s, car or on your mobile phone.
The purpose of these notes is to help you to “let go” of any feelings of desperation to climb a ladder.
“Think of it this way. Have you ever really, really, really wanted something? It’s hard to stop thinking of it, isn’t it? The only way is to either distract yourself, or tell yourself it’s not going to happen so that you can move on. This is kind of the same thing.“
Neville
Step 5 – Repeat for 3 consecutive nights
Repeat steps 1-4 for 3 nights.
Step 6 – Let go
Once you’re done, you can remove the notes and stop thinking of it entirely. This is a very important step in this process. You let go of the process, any expectations, and any attachment to the results.
You have done it, and now you trust that the Universe will do the work and it will deliver.
Neville explains this in this quote:
“Once you have planted this seed in your imagination, do not uproot it by being anxious about how it will be accomplished. Each seed has its own appointed time. Some seeds take a few days; others a little longer. Feel confident that what you have planted will appear in your world.”
“Your imagination will draw all that it needs to make your dream an actual reality. It if takes others to play a part in order to accomplish your end, your imagination will draw that person into your drama to play his or her part in the sequence of events.”
“Your only responsibility is to remain faithful to your imaginal act until you experience it in your outer world. You can repeat your imaginal act each night before falling asleep. In fact, you may wish to enact this drama over and over again until it feels normal and natural to you as you drop off to sleep. Your imagination will work out the means to realize your dream while your conscious mind sleeps.” – Neville Goddard
Consciousness Lecture by Neville Goddard
It’s a bit like ordering from the menu in the restaurant. You tell the waiter what you want, and the as the waiter leaves, you let go of what you want, trusting that the waiter will deliver your message to the chef in the kitchen and the chef will create and bring back to you what you ordered.
You are not concerned with the steps between you ordering from the menu and the final result (the food on your plate).
After three consecutive days, you can stop the exercise and see what happens.
Neville had his student try this exercise, and the results they reported were amazing.
They said that after 3 days of visualizing that they climb a ladder, they were repeatedly put in situations in which they had to climb a ladder in real life.
Goddard then explained to them that they can replace climbing a ladder with absolutely anything, because whatever we live in our imagination, we will create in real life as well.
