In my recent post The 7 Hermetic Principles Of The Kybalion we discovered that fundamental Hermetic traditions presented in The Kybalion consist of seven “working principles”. Within these seven principles is true wisdom, tied to no particular place and no particular religion, are the truths of the universe, regardless of era or creed.
The hermetic principles can be applied to a modern day scenario, some say these seven laws govern the entire universe.
We also talked about Neville Goddard’s work and how manifested anything he desired by applying the Law. One of Neville’s first experiences with “the Law” was in 1933 when he wished to return to his native Barbados despite having no money. Abdullah, The Ethiopian Jewish Mystic, taught Neville the Law, the Kabbalah and the true meaning of scripture in the Bible.

In this post we will relate one of Neville’s stories to these seven hermetic principles.
Neville’s story about the Army
“I was drafted into the army during World War II, but I wanted no part of it. When my request for a discharge was disapproved, I did not get angry and try to go over the colonel’s head. Instead, I lay down on my army cot, closed my eyes to the other fifty men in the room, and imagined I was two thousand miles away in my apartment above Washington Square in New York City.”
“Placing myself on my bed, I saw my wife sleeping in hers. Then I rose, and looking out the window, I saw the Holly Apartments across the street and Washington Square down below. Turning, I walked into the living room, dining room, and the kitchen. I felt familiar objects and brought as many of my five senses alive in the drama as possible. At 4:00 o’clock in the morning I awoke hearing a voice say, “That which I have done, I have done. Do nothing.”
“Who spoke those words? I did, but I heard them as coming from without. Knowing what I had done and what I had said, I walked in faith for nine days, doing nothing on the outside. On the tenth day the colonel who had rejected my application called me into his office and gave me an honorable discharge. “
> How Neville Got Honourably Discharged From The Army
Neville participated in the outcome in two ways: one was in the physical world. The other, in the world of imagination.
Neville filled out the paperwork, made a physical request to get out of the Army. And than his request was rejected. He did not stop at that point, and instead chose to work with his imagination where he started to feel familiar objects, and worked with the five senses to the point where his imaginal activity felt like the same activity would – in the physical world. It was then, he was told by “the voice” to do nothing.
On the tenth day, the colonel called him into his office, interviewed him, and then told him to fill out a new set of papers – and then he was discharged.
In this story Neville applies the Principle Of Mentalism “The All is Mind; the Universe is Mental.”
Neville says “The world is a magic circle of infinite possible mental transformations” – there are an infinite number of possible mental conversations. To change our mind we must first change the mental conversations we carry on with ourselves (our speech).
“Our inner conversations are the causes of the circumstances of our lives. Man’s thinking follows the tracks laid down in his own inner conversations. Speech is the image of mind, therefore to change his mind, he must first change his speech.”
As long as there is no change in your mental conversations, your personal history remains the same.
Neville says “I did not get angry.” He did not react, he did not try to change the event from the outside, but from the inside. He changed his mental conversation and used his beautiful imagination to match the image he wanted as the end result: being thousands miles away in his own apartment in New York City.
We can also clearly see how he applies the Principle of Correspondence: “As above, so below; as below, so above.” This principle states that what happens within ourselves influence everybody else and events outside events. “All is mind” embodies the idea that everything that happens has to be the result of a mental state that proceeds it. Energy follows thought, and and thoughts manifest into its actual physical form in reality. The outer world is a reflection of our inner world.
Neville placed himself in his own bed, and he saw his wife sleeping in hers. Then looked out the window, and he saw the Holly Apartments across the street and Washington Square down below. He then walked into the living room, dining room, and the kitchen. He used his five senses to fully engage with what he was imagining. What he imagined eventually externalised in his physical reality.
The practical application of The Principle of Vibration: “Nothing rests; everything moves; everything vibrates.” is described as “mental transmutation” – change your mental state and you change your vibration. Your state of mind affects your reality. Neville transmuted his emotional and mental state to achieve the desired results, which was to leave the Army and go back to his wise and daughter in New York.
Neville doesn’t just imagine being in his apartment, he fully engages with this five senses to make it real in his mind. He wants to generate the feeling of the wish fullfilled, as if it had already happened.
According to the Principle of Cause and Effect “Every cause has its effect; every effect has its cause; everything happens according to law; chance is but a name for law not recognized; there are many planes of causation, but nothing escapes the law. …Everything happens according to law.’”Chance is but a name for law not recognized. There are many planes of causation, but nothing escapes the law.”
The effect in the physical reality was that his request for a discharge was disapproved. He did not engage and pursued the effect (“I did not get angry and try to go over the colonel’s head.“) but he went straight to the cause, using his imagination to work on the plane od causation.
The priciple of gender says that “Gender is in everything; everything has its masculine and feminine principles; gender manifests on all planes.” Gender is manifested as masculine and feminine principles alike across all planes. There are polar opposites – the yin and yang.
We have a conscious mind and a subconscious mind.
The conscious mind is the male portion of consciousness and the subconscious is the female portion. If you want to manifest something into the psychical world (a desire) the male has to impregnate the female in order for it to happen. This law can easily be compared to the creation of a baby.
Neville defines what happens as a psychic sexual act, which is very similar to what happens during an orgasm; however in this case this psychic orgasm results in the impregnation of the subconscious mind.
Once the subconscious mind has been impregnated, there is an interval of time between impregnation and birth. When you are self-persuaded this is now a fact, relax in the vision’s gestation period.
Anything that is impressed upon your subconscious mind with your conscious mind will eventually birth itself into existence in the physical plane.
You impress your subconscious mind with your thoughts and feelings. Neville Goddard says that the subconscious transcends reason and will bring about whatever situation it sees fit to get the job done.
“I walked in faith for nine days, doing nothing on the outside.” Neville impregnated his subconscious mind before going to sleep by imagining himself in his apartment and creating in his heart the feeling of the wish fullfilled. In his story, the interval of time between impregnation and birth (when he was told that he could go home) was nine days.
